Yiying Lu

Yiying LuHow could I not put the creator of Twitter's failwhale on my list? Lu has a gorgeously simple style, usually with 3 colors or less, and minimalist shapes that have geometric/ traditional Chinese influence. She has done work on corporate logos, wine labels, and pet supplies among others, but I think her animal illustrations stand out as a canon of elegance.

Guilherme Marconi

A double post day, Merry Christmas.

Guilherme Marconi
Marconi is a Brazilian illustrator whose project "My Schizophrenic Brain" describes all too well how he illustrates. His latest works are multiple images repeated over and over again, deluging the senses without looking too easily replicated. What hold it together is his sense of color, that however many objects there are, they are well balanced and easily identifiable. Oddly enough a few of his older pieces are alike to Rubens Lp- do they teach abstract post-modern Picasso as a canon?

On a side note, I'd like to begin a collection of Vodafone pieces. A handful of the illustrators I've come across have their work in these ads, and I haven't found an image dump that has them all in one place...yet.

Benjamin Wachenje

Benjamin WachenjeWachenje is an illustrator and designer who has done work for Levi's and Timberland, as well as portraits of hip-hop and pop artists among many other things. He defines the culture with a style that incorporates graffiti roots, urban attitude, and tough imagery. He does clothes really well, with nice folds and use of transparencies that add a good deal of layered effect.

Andrew Bannecker

Andrew Bannecker

Bannecker's illustrations are full of quaint characters, vintage color schemes, and layers of textures that really create depth and worn in feelings. A very impressive amount of work on his flash driven site, including book covers, Vodafone ads, and I swear he's the guy that graced the Modest Mouse cd covers of both "Good News for People Who Love Bad News" and "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank." But that is total guesswork until I can check the liner notes.

Steve Scott

Steve Scott
Scott is a London based illustrator who crosses the line between still life and animation. His still images are superb, with an amazing amount of depth, color gradients, and pattern usage, enough so that I question what program he achieves this all with. His quality also carries over into his video work, which is comprised of music videos from Silverchair to Led Zeppelin to Salmonella Dub, a New Zealand reggae band, and commercials for Nokia, VH1, and Volvo.

Joe Whyte

Joe Whyte

Joe Whyte is another Illustrator from Australia, his work features a handful of editorials for magazines, as well as concert posters for acts such as Pearl Jam, Rolling Stones, AFI, and the Darkness among others. I like how he illustrates people, realistic, but toned down, striking content, very solid work all around.

Fermette

Fermette

Other than a few greeting card websites, I can find nothing else about this mysterious illustrator... be it an individual, multiple designers, or corporate conglomerate. My assumptions; they are French and they have no internet access. As much as these vivid, simplistic scenes evoke Wisconsin, fermette is a French word meaning farmhouse, or cottage, and each card depicts a variation on that theme of an ethereal slice of countryside. The style is simple, encorporating offset outlines, gradient sunrises, unabashed use of vectors by repetition with slight color variation, and transcendentally calm animals.

Ken Taylor

Ken Taylor

A downunder Illustrator/Designer, Ken has a body of work that mostly focuses on rock and roll concert posters, with a few portraits, cd jackets and storefront candy boxes thrown into the mix. He has great style, and is amazingly meticulous, but his overindulgence is due to lots and lots of shapes and color palettes that fill in the illustration. There are almost too many things going on at once, and his red's and oranges are too close to blend in, but distinct enough to drive you crazy.

New Direction

As my latest fancy has turned toward Adobe Illustrator, I'm starting a voyage of finding awesome and inspiring artists who create really solid work. These two for today both welcome deep dives into their whole bodies of work.

Mel Marcelo

He illustrates for Oakleys, but has other personal pieces on his Flickr site. Marcelo's paths just exude style. I won't gush, but his layering of skin tones in the '07 ads are fantastic, his hair never fails to amaze, and the '08 stamp ads are truly phenomenal.

Rubens Lp

Lp is a Brazilian artist, heavily influenced by Picaso, abstract movements, and the flair of tropical aviary. Excellent line work, with his subject contents coming in and out of vision by becoming linear paths, splotches and color swatches. Vibrant and bright, his work screams South American culture, jazz, sensualism and whimsy.
